Impression from the Israel Palestine Conflict Session

Von Ran Perry. Aktualisiert am 01.02.2009

On sunday morning one of the most temperamental discussions in BaKaForum took place. The sessions topic was the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is of course a fresh issue at the moment.

In the sessions 3 films were projected: two Israeli films and an Al Jazeera and teacher’s TV co production. Each film presented a different aspect of the situation. «Little Peace of Mine» is about a movement of Israeli children who wanted to make peace with Palestinian children. The film «Play Me Allegro» tells the story of a mother and her child, who live right next to the borderline, and the film «Two Schools in Nablus» presents two schools in the West Bank during the Israeli occupation.

After the projection of the films a panel discussion took place with the directors of the films and people who are related to the subject. Due to the situation in Israel and in Gaza, the films led to a charged discussion.

Even though BaKaForum is supposed to deal with the role of the media regarding the different issues, the discussion kept going back to political and ideological issues. People from the audience, which have an active role in the discussions in BaKaForum, came out strongly against the Israeli government and its actions. The producers ended up defending Israel, which wasn’t at all the purpose of the discussion.

Students who take part in BaKaForum also participated in the discussion, and this is what they had to say:

Sevda, a student from Switzerland:

Question: What did you know about the subject before going to the session?
Answer: I just knew there was a conflict and that people couldn't live in peace for some reason. I saw pictures on TV about children crying. I knew that people have different opinions about the topic.”

Q: What do you think about the films you saw?
A: The films were interesting. It was interesting to see how people live in an another culture, and how they're dealing with the difficult situation.

Q: Do you think the films were objective?
A: Yes, I think they were objective. I haven't been influenced by them.

Q: Has your opinion and view about the subject changed after participating in the forum?
A: No. They didn't make me feel any different. I still think that both sides are suffering under the current situation. I've never been to Israel, so I can only imagine how things truly are.

Dana, a student from Israel, answering the same questions:

Question: What did you know about the subject before going to the session?
Answer: That it is an extremely important issue, and I was really glad to see that people around the world find it important enough to participate in a session about it. Because I live in Israel, where the conflict is going on for years, and because of the fact I was raised at the place of the conflict, I find it an extremely sensitive issue and I’m always glad to hear diverse opinions about it.

Q: What do you think about the films you saw?
A: I think that the Israeli films presented a very left wing approach, which represents only a part of the citizens, so it was difficult for me to see only the extreme left side, because there was no representation for the right.

Q: Do you think the films were objective?
A: I think that the Israeli films were objective, especially «Play Me Allegro», which displayed the reality without supporting Israel or Palestine. The non-Israeli film, «Two Schools in Nablus», represented the Israeli Army in a negative manner.

Q: Has your opinion and view about the subject changed after participating in the forum?
A: Not at all. It made me frustrated that many people didn’t want to have a dialogue with the Israeli side, only expressing their extreme opinions without listening to our side. (baz.ch/Newsnet)
