The project complies with the Federal Council's 2050 energy strategy, which contains the construction of a gas combination power plant by 2020, Groupe E announced. The energy centre of Cornaux will be built in an industrial zone, near an existing gas power plant from the 1960ies. According to Groupe E, the location has all the necessary infrastructure available, for instance, high voltage power lines.

The power plant will start running earliest by 2018, Groupe E announced. Also taking part in the construction are the Bernese BKW and Romande Energie. Groupe E is further negotiating with the power distributor Viteos, which is the provider for Neuchâtel, Le Locle and La Chaux-de-Fonds. The gas combination power plant will produce electricity and heat. Groupe E wrote that it will bring «countless economic and financial benefits» to the canton of Neuchâtel. The power plant will ensure higher security in the supply of energy for Western Switzerland. The power centre is one of the meassures of Groupe E's business strategy to improve power efficiency and the development of renewable energy. (sda)
