Measures against biopiracy
Switzerland should take measures against biopiracy, the Federal Council said on Wednesday.
It wants to regulate access to genetic resources in order to ratify the United Nations Nagoya protocol. The community of states adopted the Nagoya protocol in 2010. It regulates access to genetic resources and the fair sharing of benefits arising from their utilization. Genetic resources are used for example in agriculture, biotechnology and the pharma and cosmetics industry.
The protocol includes provisions for traditional knowledge which is often connected with genetic resources, for example the knowledge of indigenous communities about the medicinal properties of plants. The nature conservation laws will have to be adjusted in order to implement the Nagoya protocol and to ensure that those who are utilizing genetic resources share their benefits and comply with the regulations of the corresponding states.
